The Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi has flagged off this year’s edition of Ester Pilgrimage Exercise at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Speaking at the event, the Governor thanked the leadership of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) for making it possible for the intending pilgrims from Anambra state to travel to Israel through Enugu International Airport thereby reducing the stress of travelling to Abuja or PortHarcourt to fly.

The Governor advised the intending pilgrims from his State to pray fervently for Mr President and Nigeria. His words, “You have no country except Nigeria”. He urged them to be good Ambassadors of the state while in the Holy Land and should shun anything that would tarnish the image of the state and the country.

In his address at the event, the Executive secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Mr John Kennedy Opara, thanked Mr President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for the approval to fly intending pilgrims form the south east through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. Mr Opara equally thanked Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state for ensuring that his state participates in the Easter pilgrimage. He stressed that pilgrimage is a spiritual exercise and not a jamboree. According to him, “The moment pilgrimage becomes a jamboree, I will resign”

The NCPC boss also stated that the Commission was using pilgrimage as a tool for moral and spiritual transformation. He posited that if pilgrims were transformed, they would come back to the country to impact positively on their immediate communities and the country would be better for it. He further emphasized that pilgrimage is a biblical injunction from God as evidenced in Zacharia 8:22 that “Many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of Hosts in Jerusalem and to pray before the Lord”. Thus, he admonished them to key into this and be blessed. The NCPC helmsman further told the intending pilgrims from Anambra state that pilgrimage would offer them an opportunity to pray for Mr President, their state and the country. He added, “We are the salt of the earth”. He assured them that they would come back to the country with testimonies. He further told them that “They are the ambassadors the outside world would see, you are our image”, he stressed.

The colorful flag off ceremony, the first of its kind to be held in the South East Zone since the introduction of Easter pilgrimage by NCPC, witnessed the esteemed presence of the Chairman of NCPC, His Grace, Most Reverend Nicholas D. Okoh who prayed for the pilgrims. Two Honorable ministers of the Federal Republic who are also members of the Federal Government delegation also graced the occasion. They were the Supervising Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Viola Onwuliri and the Honorable Minister of Water resources Mrs Serah Ochekpe. Four Federal Commissioners on NCPC Board and two Ex-Officio members of NCPC attended the flag off ceremony.

The inaugural flight of intending pilgrims of Anambra state to Israel for the Easter pilgrimage was made up of 184 intending pilgrims. A total of 700 intending pilgrims from the state would be airlifted to Israel this first batch which will run from 1st March – 5th March. In addition, about 111 intending pilgrims form Imo state will be airlifted during this first batch.
