In a sensitization for the 2014 Christian pilgrimage exercise, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), John Kennedy Opara and his Federal Commissioners were at, Makurdi, the State Capital of Benue on the 8th of July 2014 to pay a solidarity visit to the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Hon. Gabriel Suswam and to sensitize the good people of Benue on the 2014 Christian Pilgrimage Exercise.

Mr. Opara Commended the commitment and courage Governor Suswam on how he has been able to manage and control the security challenges of the state, according to him, “you have been strong and courageous and indeed history does not have a space for weaklings”. He prayed that God will intervene in the communal crisis and permanently restore the peace of Benue.

He thanked him for his participation in the Presidential Pilgrimage last year and appreciated him for how he has over the years contributed to the growth of Christian Pilgrimage in Nigeria. He encouraged him not to relent in his support for the things of God.

He commended the Governor for his giant strides achievements in the state especially in the areas of Agriculture, he explained that the Governor have used his good office to subsidize the price of fertilizer for farmers in the state, “this has gone a long way in increasing the farm produce of the state and has greatly touched the lives of the people in the state” he added, anyone who touches the heart of the people, touches the heart of God”.

Mr. Opara told his host that the Commission was using pilgrimage as a tool for moral and spiritual transformation. He averred that if people are transformed they would help the government to move forward.

He intimated the Governor that Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has graciously approved a concessionary exchange rate of $1 dollar to N150 naira and from 2012- 2014 to date the Commission has reduced the cost pilgrimage by 9%.

He solicited the assistance of the Governor to help sensitize Stakeholders and business men in the state on the importance of pilgrimage and the need for them to sponsor as many Christians as possible.   

Responding, the Executive Governor thanked the NCPC boss and his team for their visit. He appreciated Mr. Opara for always showing interest in the affairs of the state. He reassured that Benue State will continually support pilgrimage through the Christian Pilgrim Welfare Board of the State and further reassured that he would do everything humanly possible to sponsor  genuie Christians who have not had the opportunity to go on pilgrim in last seven years of his tenure.

He reaffirmed that Benue state has enjoyed relative peace over the past few months, he urged Christians to fervently pray for the peace Nigeria, in his words, “We are going through difficult period as a country, but keeping praying and God in his mercy will hear our prayers”.

Mr. Opara was accompanied on the sensitization visit by the Federal Commissioner representing North Central, Mrs Helen Ughoro, her counterparts in South East Rev. Zion Ibenye and the Zonal Co-ordinator North Central, Rev. Joseph Chibuogu.
